The Pocket Zone software
runs on many different handheld computers, all of which use
either the Windows CE or the Pocket PC operating system. There
are two basic types of handheld computers commonly used for
collecting measurements: general purpose and "ruggedized." All
the handheld computers shown here are ideal for running The
Pocket Zone.

GENERAL PURPOSE
POCKET PCs
General purpose handheld computers
are inexpensive but they are also fragile and only suitable
for use in dry, mild weather. These Pocket PCs include the
HP iPAQ, and many others. As long as the one you
choose is using the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system,
The Pocket Zone should run on it. They range in price from
$200
- $600 U.S. |

| HP iPAQ -
ideal for Pocket Zone Manual Entry and total station devices.
Make sure you get a model that supports a serial cable,
like the iPAQ 2210 or higher. (To use an iPAQ with some
total stations you may need a gender
changer and/or a null
modem adaptor.) |
The Otter Box -
You may want to add an environ- mental case like this Otter
Box. It's an inexpensive way to "ruggedize" your
general purpose Pocket PC to make it more resistant to
water and shock. |

RUGGEDIZED
POCKET PCs
|
"Ruggedized" handheld
computers, like the TDS Recon, are designed for outdoor
use. They can withstand rain and cold temperatures and
many of these devices can even be dropped from a 4' height
without sustaining damage. They are often designed to control
a device like a total station so they have the required
serial port and cable - but ask the manufacturer just to
be sure! The only down-side to these devices is that they
are much more expensive, ranging in price from $1000 -
$3000 U.S.
