From the Office of
Domestic Preparedness
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has
unveiled a $566 million Homeland Security grant program for state and local
first-responder agencies. The Office of Domestic Preparedness will
administer the program, which may be used to cover costs associated with
risk and needs assessments, equipment purchases, training, exercise support
and technical assistance.
Applications for funds will be made through
the governor's office in each state. According to the DHS, states will
receive an initial response to their application by April 29. Funds would be
issued to the states within three weeks of this initial communication. Once
states receive the funds, they will have 45 days to transfer 80% of the
funds to local governments.
Grant application forms are posted at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/fundopps.htm.
The deadline for applications is April 22. A chart listing the total
allocation of grant funds each state is eligible to receive in FY 2003 is
below.
Any questions on this program should be directed to the Office of Domestic
Preparedness at 1-800-368-6498.
